Welcome to Salted Vanilla! We are a social cataloging web app for scented candles. We aim to solve the "discoverability" problem, and help users find the perfect candle for every occasion! This article will detail the different ways you can interact with the site to help you with your search for the perfect candle.
Registration
Most of the site is viewable to the public. However you must register for an account to start writing reviews and cataloging different web. The great news is that it's super simple to register! If you clicked around the website enough, you may have found our signup page. There is a direct link on the home page of the site, a black button that says "Create a free account." There you can sign up using your email, password, and create a unique username for your profile. You can change your username in the future if your choose! Also you must agree to our terms of use and our privacy policy.
Afterwards you'll have a cute URL to your profile @ saltedvanilla [dot] com/<username>
Please don't forget to finish registration by clicking the link in your email from no-reply [at] mail [dot] saltedvanilla [dot] com. Check spam for the email if it's not in your regular inbox.

Finishing up your Profile (Editing your Profile)
After you register for an account, you will be able to finish your profile by choosing a profile picture and writing a bio for yourself. You will also find your email and your username, the latter is editable. You can edit your profile, by editing your account details. Click your username in the navigation bar up top, then click account. Don't forget to click save changes after you update your profile.
Underneath your profile picture you will see a checkbox denoting whether or not your profile picture is approved. Until your profile picture is approved, your profile picture will be the generic SV logo picture. Pictures are check periodically for sensitive content. You will be notified when your picture gets approved. We will add AI image moderation in an upcoming update which will allow immediate profile picture changes.
Your profile page will show your name, your love count, your profile picture, your bio, your favorites, your Have/Want/Had lists and all your reviews. Everyone starts off with a blank profile and 1 love. We can't wait to see how you choose to fill your profile up!
Reviews
Reviews are fairly straight forward. Simply go to any candle and click the "+Review" button. To edit a review, go to your list of reviews on your profile page and you will find links in every review so you can update your thoughts. There, you can also find a button to delete your review if you choose to do so.
In a review you can double check your account and the candle you are rating on. You will be able to choose a number of stars to describe how you rank the candle, and
Experience
Experience is the newest section in the candle page. You can rate your experience with the candle. Right now you can vote on a candle's cold throw and warm throw. Soon a new field for burn quality will be added. If you have any suggestions about this section, please feel free to send some feedback with those suggestions, I'm happy to add other fields if heavily requested!
You can click the "Vote here!" link at the end of the experience section to vote. That link will turn into a "Update Vote Here!" link after you vote, and you can click the link to update your vote.
Favorites and Lists
Much like how a profile on Letterboxd can be judged by their favorite films list, your Salted Vanilla Profile can be judged by your favorite candles! Choose accurately! Or don't, whatever you want!
To add a candle to your favorites, simply go to the candle page, then click the "+Favorites" button in between the Review button and the Lists button. Then confirm on the following page.
Similar idea to adding a candle to your Have/Want/Had lists. Simply click the downward arrow on the Lists button on a candle page, click "+<Type of List> List" and confirm on the next page.
The "+Favorites" button becomes a "-Favorites" button, and you can click that button, and confirm on the next page, to remove a candle from your Favorites list. The same thing is true of the Have/Want/Had lists drop down button.
With favorites, you can only have three at a time. The confirm screen will just refresh if you already have three. It will not alert you of an error message or anything. Fixing this bug will come in a future update.
We also plan on adding custom title lists with individual and beautiful pages of candles and captions for included candles. We will roll customs lists out in a future update. If you are excited for custom lists, please let us know!
Search
My personal favorite feature is search. Search Candles by Brand name, note type, or just candle name! Here are a couple tips. Sometimes after searching by a specific name, you then try to search by note. If you don't remove the letters in the name contains text search bar, it will search for candles with both the selected notes and the name! Also, you can choose to search with multiple scents by clicking one scent, then holding down "option"(Mac) before clicking another note. Note this is an inclusive search by note search, meaning that candles with one or more of any selected note will be included in search results. Soon, we will add a different search for exclusive search by note search, meaning only candles with every selected note will be included in search results.
We have plans on making search by note simpler. We would love feedback if you have any suggestions. If you are someone into scents, I hope you'll enjoy this feature today and for years to come!
The Love System
As you may have noticed, there are heart buttons all over the site. Some clickable and others not. These hearts buttons are the foundation of The Love System, how we determine quality content on Salted Vanilla. The Love System is similar in function to Reddit's Karma or Facebook's Like system.
Candles, reviews, and profiles all have a love rating, and the more love the better for visibility. Reviews get an increase whenever someone other than the author hearts a review. A review author's profile gets an increase in their love rating whenever one of their reviews gets hearted. A user's profile gets five hearts for every candle they add to the catalog. A candle gets an increase to it's love rating whenever it gets reviewed or gets its experience voted on. The language, the implementation, and the implications of the Love System still a work in progress. Please send thoughts!
How to send Feedback
To send Feedback, simply click Feedback on the general footer and it will link you to our about page. If you are registered and logged in, you will see a textbox where you can submit your feedback.
Feedback is very important to us since we a rapidly growing community and we want to make sure the site stays congruent with the wants and needs of our core community member: dedicated candle lovers like yourselves!
